084 - Great Uncle Horace (Somme Veteran, 1916)

My great uncle Horace William Baker (standing third from right, back row) poses with his New Zealand Rifle Brigade squad at what was likely a local training camp in late 1915, shortly before embarking overseas. Horace went on to serve with the 4th Battalion’s machine gun section on the Western Front, where he lost his leg at the Battle of the Somme later that year. Following medical evacuation to England, he returned home to New Zealand. Photographer unknown.
