084 - Great uncle Horace at The Somme, 1916

My great uncle Horace William Baker poses for a picture with his New Zealand Expeditionary Force (NZEF) squad at a staging camp or reserve depot at The Somme in 1916. Located third from the right (back row) wearing a flat cap and full service dress tunic, Horace was tasked with heavy barrage support and battery operations under direct counter-battery fire. After losing his leg he was evacuated to England where he had the opportunity to visit family in Kent before returning to New Zealand.
